The
Coast Guard K9 History
Related to the declaration
of Her Excellency President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to take action against terrorism, a K9 detection unit was established
by the Philippine Coast Guard through the support of the Philippine Ports Authority to address the need for maritime security.
This unit was mandated
to provide K9 operations to ensure the safety and security of commercial vessels, ship riding public and Philippine ports
from terrorist attacks and unlawful activities.
Pursuant to General to
General Order Number 15, Headquarters Coast Guard Operating Forces dated 15 May 2002, the Coast Guard K9 Group was activated
effective 22 May 2002, composed of three (3) Officers, twelve (12) Enlisted Personnel and Four (4) Coast Guard Working Dogs
(CGWD).
Eventually, the Coast Guard
K9 was downgraded as an operating unit of the Special Operations Group of the Coast Guard Operating Forces due to lack of
officers and enlisted personnel under the command of CDR RG CAUSAPIN PCG, pursuant to to General Order Number 27 Headquarters
Coast Guard Operating Forces dated 15 October 2002 effective same date with two (2) officers, seventeen (17) EP and ten (10)
CGWD
Pursuant to Headquarters Philippine Coast Guard General Order 106 dated 23 July 2007, CGK9 was detached under the Special Operating Group
(SOG) and was placed as a separate unit under the Maritime Security and law Enforcement Command (formerly Coast Guard Operating
Forces). Currently, the CGK9 has with seven (7) officers, Seventy six (76) EP, forty-five (45) working dogs and 11 training
dogs.
